Perfection, but only for techies.

I'll be honest, I started getting skeptical when I started seeing the reviews here. Lots of commentary about people not receiving proper tech support, horrible stabilization, and lack of gapless recording. These seem far from reasons to warrant a single star, but alas, I still took the plunge. I played around with the Canon HFS100 before settling with the sanyo due to the major savings for basically the same CMOS sensor and lens aperture. I use a Velbon 540 and stabilization is not an issue even when running. For anyone on the fence about this, really look at the stuff posted on vimeo using stabilizers and wide angle lenses. Now Like I said, this camera is for tinkerers, if you know what the roadblocks are and don't mind them, get ready to delight in a truly incredible camera. Who is this not for? The average Joe and Jane recording Bobby's Piano recital will despise this thing, just like they would despise a DSLR.
[...]
PRO's:
+Image quality and optics among the best for a consumer camera under $2000.
+External Mic input
+60FPS means semi-slowmo shots that turn out awesome.
+high speed recording clean even if it lacks quality.
+Lenses and filters available to shorten DOF and do wide angle or telephoto shots.
+H.264 is simple to work with, and lightning quick to transcode using nvidia's badaboom.
CON's:
-zero stabilization (fix: buy a Manfrotto 585 for $99)
-internal mic on back of LCD (odd, real odd)
-not for "My MOM"
-some of the interface is quirky.
-no electronic viewfinder.

I am a new owner of the Sanyo VPC-HD2000. I reckon it's an brilliant camcorder. Here's my remarks:
The low light performance of this camcorder is "Wow". I did research before buying and according to camcorderinfo, this is the best value of 2009. I have no regrets by far. The image quality is high definition.
The battery life is about 200 minutes and the time remaining before you have to recharge appears on the screen for your convenience.
Either you buy it from Hong Kong or North America doesn't matter. There's plenty of languages you can set from menu: English, Francais, Deutsch, Español, Italiano, Nederlands, Russian, Portuguès, Türkçe, and what appears to be Hebrew and 3 asian languages, probably Japanese, Chinese and Traditional chinese (but I am no expert of these last 4)
There's a TV OUTPUT menu where you choose either PAL or NTSC; 4:3 or 16:9; 1080p 720p 1080i or 480p.
A surprise for me is that you can edit your video directly from the camcorder menu, you can join or cut parts of what you recorded.
There's a very small remote to access the docking station from distance. Everything works well. I reckon this camcorder looks excellent. It is not heavy.
So this is it for now, I don't reckon this can be beat at this price. Larger and more costly camcorders requires more light to provide quality image in low light condition. So the HD2000 is probably the best for everyday use: travel, party, youtube, ect... |

Sanyo VPC-HD2000A Xacti 8MP High Definition 1080P (Black)
This works fantastic, for everything I need a pocket video camera to do it handles it.
I shoot sports video, I use this camera with my large HD cameras. Now that I have it I am not sure how I worked without it.
Full HD all the way. thanks Sanyo!! |
You get your moneys worth!

| I bought an HD camcorder a few days before I saw the Sanyo VPC-HD2000A. The other camcorder cost more than twice as much as the Sanyo VPC-HD2000A, didn't have as many features and wasn't as simple to opperate! The Sanyo VPC-HD2000A is comfortable to hold in your hands boots in less than 2 seconds, has a 12MP option in the menu, several video options including two modes of slow motion!! How cool is that?! You must use an SDHC chip for it to work but I don't view that as a negative. It has a docking bay which is simple to use. If you prefer not to use the docking bay you can take the SDHC chip out and use Nearly any SD chip reader! Did I say I returned the other camcorder?... Awesome it was like getting paid for buying a better product! I like the Sanyo VPC-HD2000A and I reckon you will too! |
Quick and simple use!

| I was looking for a small HD video recorder. The Sanyo VPC-HD2000A Xacti is a fantastic small performer. I can pick it up, turn it on and start recording in mere seconds. Opening the screen turns it on, so I am not fumbling for an on/off switch. I do wish the video stabilization were a bit better, but for its intended purpose it works fine. If you want a professional HD camera spend more money. If you want to capture life as it happens in an instant, this camera works fantastic. |
